TAP-OUT BJJ MUMBAI ACADEMY

ABOUT BJJ

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is based upon grappling and ground fighting with the aim of gaining a dominant position and using joint-locks and chokeholds to force submission. It has the principle that a smaller, weaker person using leverage and proper technique can successfully grapple against a bigger and stronger assailant.
It is of two types depending upon uniform (Gi). With uniform its called Gi-BJJ and without uniform its No Gi BJJ. The advantage of no uniform is what makes it practical in MMA tournaments, street combat and self defense situations.

We are authorised training center of Jiu Jitsu Global Federation, Rickson Gracie's institution. Our members are recognised practitioners of JJGF. Please click on the below link to visit the JJGF website.

At Tap Out, we teach No Gi Jiu Jitsu. To learn under us, please Call: +91 9820496752.
We run courses of 3 to 6 month durations, twice weekly.

Types of BJJ: GI OR NO GI

The primary distinction between GI and NO GI Jiu-Jitsu lies in the attire and gripping strategies. In GI Jiu-Jitsu, practitioners utilize the fabric of the gi to establish control, execute sweeps, and apply submissions. Conversely, NO GI practitioners rely on direct physical contact and friction to achieve similar outcomes.

What is GI BJJ?
In GI BJJ, practitioners train in the traditional BJJ uniform called the gi. Training focuses on collar, sleeve, and belt grips. The gi is mostly used to complete submissions. While several submissions such as the guillotine, kneebars, and kimuras are performed without the use of the gi, many submissions utilize collar or sleeve grips to tap out opponents.

What Is No-gi Jiu Jitsu?
No-gi Jiu Jitsu practitioners train in rash guards and spats, shorts, or gi pants. When training no-gi, grips on clothes are not allowed. To translate grips from gi to no-gi, a grip behind the neck is equivalent to a collar grip to control your opponent’s head. Instead of a sleeve grip, a grip on the wrist or ankle is used.
The pace of no-gi is much faster than gi Jiu Jitsu. Since gis are not worn, friction is decreased significantly. Grips are harder to maintain because people sweat and gripping a slippery wrist or ankle, for example, isn’t an easy task. Opponents get into and out of positions much faster than in the gi, without the use of grips on clothing.

Advantages of NO GI

  • No-gi Jiu Jitsu can teach you a lot about controlling your opponent in a tough, fast paced environment. Because of the fast pace of no-gi and the fact that you can’t rely on gi grips, no-gi forces you to work to learn to control and maintain grips. Grips are much easier to break, so if you can master maintaining grips in no-gi BJJ, you can most certainly master that in gi BJJ.
  • No-gi is also great for learning how to distribute your weight. It’s a lot harder to control your own body, never mind your opponents, when training no-gi. The decreased friction forces you to learn to position yourself in the best possible place to distribute your weight so that you don’t get swept and you can have the best pressure when controlling your opponent.
  • No-gi Jiu Jitsu doesn’t allow for shortcuts. Transitions are made at the blink of an eye and if your Jiu Jitsu is sloppy, you can place yourself in some very bad positions. Being technical is a must in a fast-paced match.
  • Training no-gi will quickly teach you to have the right angles and make the right pressure at the right times in order to avoid being caught in sweeps or submissions.
  • No-gi Jiu Jitsu is closely related to MMA and self-defense techniques. All MMA matches use no-gi Jiu Jitsu, whether it’s Invicta or UFC. Outside of the earliest years of the UFC, gis are never worn in MMA. So, if MMA is your goal then no-gi training is a must.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Maj Rao is an honorary officer of the Parachute regiment TABN, Indian Army. He is a Presidents Rank awardee and is credited with pioneering modern close quarter battle methodology by the Ministry of Defence. He is one of only six Indians to be knighted with rank honour by the President of India alongwith Kapil Dev, Mohanlal, MS Dhoni, Abhinav Bindra and Sachin Tendulkar for his contributions to modernization of Close Quarter Battle in the Indian Army.
My Black Belt in BJJ was awarded by Prof. Adolphe Auguste from Syndicat De Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, France on 14 Nov 2016. He passed away into his heavenly abode in Aug 2017. On 28 Aug 2018, I was accepted into Rickson Gracie’s JJGF Jiu Jitsu Global Federation and after background verification of my rank, lineage and expertise was awarded Blackbelt recognition status and my academy Tap Out received a ‘Certified Academy’ status.
Rao is awarded Master Instructor certification in Bruce Lees art and philosophy of Jeet Kune Do by his decade long Teacher, GM Richard Bustillo well known Original Student of Bruce Lee from CA, USA. JKD emphasizes personalisation of art and believes that art has to be tailormade to the individuals needs (like age, gender, body type, persnality etc). Rao uses this philosophy to teach BJJ skills tailormade to students. It is to be noted that we donot teach any traditional art in keeping with the Bruce Lee philosophy. Therefore we teach no Gi Jiu Jitsu without uniform for combat & practical self defense applications. On date, Rao and his school stay bonafide member of Jiu Jitsu Global Federation under GM Rickson Gracie.

Note on an online Slander video attempting to defame Us:

One american online video is out to malign me labelling my BJJ Black Belt as fake! (despite the fact that I am a verified Blackbelt member of Rickson Gracies JJGF) My Black Belt was awarded by Prof. Adolphe Auguste from Syndicat De Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, France on 14 Nov 2016. He passed away into his heavenly abode in Aug 2017. On 28 Aug 2018, I was accepted into Rickson Gracie’s JJGF Jiu Jitsu Global Federation and after background verification, received a ‘Certified Academy’ status with Black Belt member Certificate. Similarly, Sensei Ralph Villa from Team Lockjaw also accepted me as a BB member of Team Lockjaw on 15 August 2019 with Blackbelt membership certificates. I was not graded Blackbelt by GM Rickson Gracie or Sensei Ralph Villa but recognised as a legitimate BB member of their orgs. Online troller video says that since Prof. Adolphe RIP is no more, there is no way of verifying my Black belt. It further says I claim to be ‘certified directly’ by GM Rickson Gracie. Following this slander, Grandmaster Rickson Gracie further endorsed my black-belt credential expressing sympathy for the slander. Click here
Further this online video falsely alleges that I manufactured the Jeet Kune Do Certificate awarded by my dearest decade long Teacher, GM Richard Bustillo, well known Original Student of Bruce Lee from CA, USA. His IMB certificate grants me ‘Master Instructor’ status awarded in 2015 during his Mumbai visit to train me. This certificate bears a ‘validity date’ of 2018 whereas GM Bustillo passed away in 2017. The troller has highlighted the validity date, mislabelling it as issue date- stating how can GM Bustillo issue a certificate after he died!? This is clearly an attempt to malign me.
I am a very respectable citizen of India, President's rank awardee and part of Parachute regiment TABN, Indian Army. I am one of only six Indians to be knighted with rank honour by the President of India alongwith Kapil Dev, Mohanlal, MS Dhoni, Abhinav Bindra and Sachin Tendulkar for my contributions to modernization of Close Quarter Combat in the Indian Army. I am not here to meet any trollers expectations but to sincerely teach art as a passionate pursuit.
Yours truly
Maj Rao
